Poodle Pulse
In Search of the Next Topic
I am searching for my next topic, so I wanted to uncover the top ten issues in standard poodles. Here is what I found:
- Hip Dysplasia 8-12%
- Addison’s Disease 5-10%
- Sebaceous Adenitis 5-10%
- Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus 5-10%
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) 2-5%
- Epilepsy 2-5%
- Hypothyroidism 2-5%
- VonWillebrand’s Disease (vWD) 1-3%
- Cancer varies by age but up to 30% in older dogs
- Immune-Mediated Disorders 1-3%
So with that list, I added links to the topics I addressed previously. IMT has been addressed by Poodle Health Registry.
- Hip Dysplasia 8-12%
- Addison’s Disease 5-10%
- Sebaceous Adenitis 5-10%
- Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus 5-10%
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) 2-5% – disease can be eliminated by DNA test.
- Epilepsy 2-5% – there are good Facebook support groups, but I may tackle this one next.
- Hypothyroidism 2-5% – we test Thyroid at years 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9 to detect hypo or hyper thyroidism.
- VonWillebrand’s Disease (vWD) 1-3% – disease can be eliminated by DNA test.
- Cancer – varies by age but up to 30% in older dogs.
- Immune-Mediated Disorders 1-3% – Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia, Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia (IMT)
Immune-Mediated Disorders may have a relationship to vaccination and I wrote about Titering as an alternative, but also using monovalent vaccines in lieu of multivalent vaccines:
And since we can rule out two of the diseases through DNA testing, and Cancer is too broad to capture well, that leaves me with Epilepsy. My dad had a Keeshond when I was growing up who had Epilepsy so I think I might do some research and tackle that one unless there are suggestions.
