Grooming Tips – Tools Part 1

Every Poodle’s coat is unique and may require different grooming tricks and tools—some are soft and fine, others coarse and thick, and many are a blend of both. While some coats require extra moisturizing, others do not. Finding the right products for your Poodle often involves a bit of trial and error. Here, I’ll share some of my favorite products and how I use them.

Tools

Comb – wide, long tooth for finding and working on larger mats in a thicker and/or longer coat.

Comb – combination of coarse and fine teeth, good for working progressively on mats and finding smaller mats or for fluffing

Comb – fine tooth comb is good for finding smaller mats and fluffing coat.

Parting comb – for banding or wrapping longer hair as straight lines are needed to avoid irritation.

Brushes – Big K example: long pins, less dense pins are useful for dematting as every stroke gently picks out strands from the mat. It is very important to always use brushing spray and keep the brush on a straight path when brushing a poodle. Never curve your wrist while brushing.

Brushes – Big G example: long pins, more dense pins – good for fluffing poodle coat and eliminating separated hair (like after being wet).

Slicker brushes – Mark example: slickers are useful for straightening hair while drying with warm air.

Band cutters – there are a variety to choose from. Pick the one you can use while saving as much hair as possible.

Hemostats – I recommend finger plucking as much as possible, but sometimes the brain hair starts too deep to get your fingers on it. In that case, be very cautious you don’t catch any skin. I use a headlamp that adjusts 45 degrees so I can see the canal very well.

Headlamp – make sure it adjusts downward similar to this one from Harbor Freight.
